Be Your Own Pet gets awkward with a night of karaoke

by Rebecca Willa Davis

Be Your Own Pet may be known for playing loud back-to-basics punk music, getting signed by Thurston Moore’s label when they were still in high school, and starting the occasional fight onstage and in clubs, but ELLEgirl saw a different—dare we call it softer—side of this Nashville foursome when we invited Jemina Pearl Abegg, Nathan Vasquez, Jonas Stein and John Eatherly to a night of karaoke. There was a falsetto version of The Supremes’s “Baby Love”, an uplifting cover of Creed’s “Higher”, and even a heart wrenching (some may say ear-splitting) rendition of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. Yes, they’ve graced the cover of major magazines and have toured the world, but Be Your Own Pet proved that they still know how to get awkward.
